Too bad I was working with such a thick marker, but it still turned out pretty good. This is about four coats done in two stages, plus I went through three or four designs in Photoshop. I may add more later when I can afford more markers.

Seriously, what the hell, Nintendo?

I originally drew this in a completely different style, then trashed it because for some reason I figured it would look better in the Gigi Digi-esque style I eventually went with. I like the result a lot! Usually I sketch, then ink, then erase, and then colour, but for this I completely skipped inking. It's also worth noting that this was done with a MOUSE. My tablet broke a while back and I still haven't gotten around to getting a new one.

Lots of stuff going down lately I guess.

The store I work at is closing down. I should be fine in the short term. Just the same, it's got me thinking. The entire town's been coming in in droves to take advantage of the closing sale, including most of the fair-weather-frenemy types I broke off relations with last year. I fully expect my parents to visit too, since the store and email are their only methods of contacting me. And as these people file in and out, I realize that I don't give a shit about any of them anymore. I don't even remember the names of the people I hung out with in college.
So I don't think there's any reason to stay in this town any more.
I think it's time to move again, and to start over. It's going to take some doing, but I can make it. I'm better than this town.

Hell, maybe I'll even take up drawing again.

I know I already don't update on a schedule of any sort, but I figured I'd give a warning anyway that I'll be moving in the next week or so and money will be tight until I get a second job, so I won't have an internet connection until I have a reliable second paycheque. I'll be pretty bored and I've been getting some good ideas, so I'll likely be drawing/decorating/sculpting/lego-ing a lot. Don't be surprised if there's a big art update when I come back.

I also want to find a practical way to start selling stuff to my meager audience and get the word out about this blog, etc etc. Currently I should be able to get by even with the apartment expenses, but a little extra income never hurt.
It's good that I'm getting out of here. Bad stuff is happening.

The second one is my favourite. And no, I'm not exaggerating. I did a double-take when I read it. The whole story arc (volumes 5-7 in the Dark Horse print) is Astro being his most absolutely terrifying.

I know I don't normally use this blog to post personal things, but it recently came to my attention that a surprising number of people I've met all over the internet read this blog. That's pretty snazzy. You should comment sometime.
Basically, I just wanted to say: My life is finally on track. I'm out about my gender and sexuality to most of my friends, and I'm in the process of telling my coworkers and parents (who I no longer live with, by the way). I've started living as a girl at home, and I'm going to be attending school as a girl in the spring.
Not everything is perfect, but things have finally started.

Trying out some new-ish brush pens today, too. The result is a little Yoshihiro Tatsumi. The colouring is just awful, though.
I've got a long weekend, and I've been thinking up some 4koma I want to draw. Four-panel comics are fun and they're good practice for brevity and pacing.

Anyway, since this is the twenty-fifth post, I felt like changing the header. It still doesn't have an apostrophe, but I guess you've got to work with the fonts you get.

The comic I'm doing for Animaritime is actually more of an "art book"; as it's just short comics and random standalone art selections. Here is one such standalone page.

There is so much that I could point out for this picture, but I'll try to just say what's important.
She's intentionally chubby and has a broken-looking nose. I like to give characters understandable physical flaws to keep them from being cute by default. It's a trait that I picked up from Radd.
She strikes me as being that one really cool girl you know who's sex-positive while being intelligent enough to know what that means. She's probably listening to Metric. This picture only uses seven colours, not counting black and white.

I've finally gotten back into drawing on a regulat basis. Yesterday I just started doodling on a sheet of paper with a classmate and suddenly I'm actually drawing things for fun again.
(I don't have said doodles, but I mostly drew cats and fat people)

I'm doing a comic for Animaritime, and I want this guy to be a protagonist.

I've been doing all sorts of different eyes lately. I'm really liking these ones, inspired by Scott McCloud and (especially) Kazu Kibuishi. I'm also using the exact same facial structure (based on an extremely simplified human skull) in every one of these.

Profile views. The top one really isn't very good.

I really want to do a story with the detective and the blatantly evil guy in the same style. I only just realized how blatently I ripped off nedroid's mascot robot.

I love Tezuka's work, but I've never really figured out how to replicate that feeling. These two drawings make me think that I'm getting it, though. The black-sirted boy is my favourite drawing in a while.

Vectorial Poison and Con Artists

I have Adobe Illustrator and -oddly enough- am not terrible at using it (though gimme dat elephant looks a little bendy in places and the yellow scratch pin is miscoloured).

Animaritime is coming up soon, or at least Artist Alley registrations are. I've been thinking that, this year, I'd like to set up a booth. Tables are cheap and it's not like I have to be good (this is an anime convention). I could make some buttons and/or posters and either sell or give away mini-comics with purchases. It's a good way to make a small profit (or, at the worst, lose only a small amount of money), and I could get some actual occasional visitors on my blag. I know that I probably shouldn't try to get money for my stuff just yet (I've still got a ways to go), but I think it would be fun and it would give me a chance to actually make some stuff for a change. Pretty much the only draws for me right now are:
1) I would have to spend a lot of time at my booth, and therefore not spend all of my time buying as many Nausicäa manga as possible.
2) Original characters don't sell well and I've never really thought of my art as something that would appeal to a room full of people who know how to do every Naruto "jutsu" hand signal, so I would have to draw (shudder) fanart. Anime and Video Game fanart. This is why I would give out comics for free with purchases. Short of writing (shudder shudder), I couldn't really get anyone to read anything I wrote without just packing it in for free. I'd like to write some short comics and do a slightly revised version of Rubikon.
3) I value the anonymity of my art, so selling it from a booth seems a little weird for me.

It's for a colour theory class and I swear it looks about a million times better in print (especially the white page [which I had to make "the grey page"] and the yellow page). Next I have to finish a writeup essay on it. Blaaaaagh.
I think the first few and last few pages best capture what I was going for, but the last page is honestly pretty underwhelming, especially given how awesomely the previous page turned out.

The colour choices match the six sides of a Rubik's cube, in case you didn't get it.

This was actually a design for a t-shirt, but I needed a new header. It would make a good business card, too, if I were ever lame enough to give out business cards.
I really ought to stop doing these and try something else (I feel like I'm branding everything with Mr. Scratchitt), but they're so fun. At the very least I want to keep going with this style for a little while.
Also, this one is just about 100% ellipses and looks like it's supposed to.

Lately I've decided that I need to throw out most of my stuff. I think I'll do that today. I just have too many things that I never use and I'd like to narrow it down quite a bit.

A Long Time Coming

Hee hee. I think I'll finally get back into the habit of posting here, since I'm doing more lately. I decided that, while my primary mode of communication with people is through forums, I don't really contribute much to the discussion outside of posting art. So I'll just post it here instead!

This is the new cover for my portfolio. The figure in the center is the enigmatic Mr. Scratchit. This entire picture was drawn on my computer except for Mr. Scratchitt himself, who is greatly changed from the original drawing.

There's a second version here where the wazzup lightning doesn't overlap in the same way.

I did this immediately after, marking the first time I have ever drawn anything but a sprite entirely using a computer. Mr. Scratchitt is made almost entirely using the ellipse tool.

Here's a nice scene I did a few weeks ago. There are mistakes here and there that I should fix, but I think it's nice.

This was made entirely to see how well I could colour on my computer in the first place (not very well at the time and not particularly better now).

Expect more posts (for once) now that I have both free time and the inspiration to draw something! I'm experimenting right now, with colour and digital art and all of that fun stuff. Another post will be here later today, I'm sure of it!

I picked up a copy of Making Comics by Scott McCloud while I was out of town yesterday (having already read Understanding Comics), and was more or less blown away. I'm glad I got it while starting such a big project. I also picked up the first volume of The Maxx, but I don't think that's helping me any.

The first panel of the first page of the new project without any image manipulation (or even erasing or pencilling) yet. If you attempted to judge the subject of the new project by this one panel or even this page, you would invariably completely miss the mark completely.

The second picture is huge to show off the details. To clarify, the whole thing is about eight and a half centimetres tall. Ignore the fact that the left wing doesn't have any scales on it. I just noticed it now and added them in.
This first page is inspired by the opening credits to Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind, but I won't be using the image for much more than metaphor.

I will be updating project progress on teg's dumb art from now on, if I haven't mentioned that already.

The Pitch

Okay, so, I'm gonna' try to do a comic (tentatively dubbed "Promised Land", but I don't like the religious implications that go with that so I might change it).
It's a few stories about a couple of people two generations into the future or so. Environmental effects have greatly changed the world, and so mass migrations of people are necessary. A lot of it has to be on foot since the landscape has changed so much. Gasoline-powered vehicles are illegal and fuel is scarce (though electric vehicles are equally scarce since power is only generated in the major cities), and since most factories have collapsed a lot of things have either been mass-produced by hand or passed down. Excavation of natural resources is outlawed, so people recycle a lot of things (mostly metal and pulp) or just reuse things to their fullest extent (a great deal of practical historical artifacts are now being used again, such as swords), and since ammunitions are no longer manufactured except in a handful of cases in the major cities, projectile weapons are a rarity. Food's changed a lot with the shifting environment, and bugs are one of the most popular snack foods (Super Bug Yums: Now available in Crunchy Cricket and Sour Cream Scorpion flavours). The most notable thing about the world these days is that the population has been on an expected downward slope since the migrations started. Some people refused to move and died, and some died during the journey. But nature has balance, and now a one-in-a-million chance has a lot more potency. As much as it did in medieval times, in fact.
Take for example, two of the main characters. One is a ranger of the UN Relocation project (the project dedicated to migrating as many people into the major cities as they can. Essentially, they're trying to evacuate what's left of certain areas [the main story takes place in North America and goes on to... I dunno. Somewhere further East or something]), who has never broken a promise. In fact, he can't. He is physically incapable of breaking a promise he makes to someone. The other is a wanderer and occasional priest of his own church. His gift is the ability to trade one thing for an equal thing. One object for another, one strength for another, one life for another. His church is mostly unknown, but has been widely controversial since he allowed one of his followers to trade her life for that of one she loved. Now he wanders, his motives clear only to himself.

I Have An Idea!

Heehee. I got an idea. For a comic or something. I'll need to do lots of sketches to plan it out, so I'll be posting a lot of stuff like this.

I realize that I don't post a lot of pictures with people in them, so I'll mention ahead of time that I don't draw a lot of manga-esque junk (although I do read a lot of manga and some manga-esque junk), it's just that for this particular project I can't do anything too cartoony or realistic (except for backgrounds, which I insist on making realistic). A manga style seems to fit. Thus far I have three or four major characters planned out, a long with a couple of important plot points, environment concepts, etc. I know just how to do the setting but I'll need practise to draw it right.
I think I want to do this one too. I've had lots of comic ideas in the past, but I never follow through with them. This one, though, is a good challenge and I can keep it short. And most importantly, it's not something I think I'll have doubts about. A lot of comics I've tried to do I eventually realized were too similar to other things. They were never unoriginal, in my defense, but they were never different enough to satisfy me. This oe isn't. And I may actually finish it.
You'll probably like it hopefully!

By the way, I have been considering occasionally reviewing things on this blog. Comics, mostly. I may do that in the future. It's not that I want to write a review blog, it's that I like to recommend things and I have a tendency to write in a review format when I write about things I like or dislike.

I got The Absolute Sandman volume 2, all of the Fullmetal Alchemist DVDs, a copy of "Thud!" by Terry Pratchett, "Lost at Sea" by Bryan Lee O'Malley, Children of Men on DVD, new headphones, "Trauma Center: New Blood", and "Challengers" by The New Pornographers, among some other stuff. I also got some neat stuff from my friends (a mug full of candy, Fullmetal Alchemist volume 14, and a Firefly print). It was probably the best Christmas I've ever had.
